A Swinging Time was Had by All

Over 200 guests attended AUSTRIAN SAMPLES & SWING held at the Sofitel Water Tower in Chicago on Friday, March 19, 2010. The promotion was held in conjunction with the visit of Austrian Federal Minister Niki Berlakovich (Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management) to Chicago. Minister Berlakovich joined Austrian Consul General Thomas Schnöll and Austrian Trade Commissioner Franz Rössler for an evening tasting of wines, beers, schnapps, artisinal breads, coffee, tea, pastries, organic snacks, and authentic Austrian pumpkin seed oil.

The Minister addressed the guests on the importance of the wine industry in Austria, stressing the motto “quality before quantity.” Although Austrians consume 73% of their own production, exports have increased considerably over the past years. The USA is the third biggest export market for Austrian wine! “Grüner Veltliner” is Austria’s flagship wine with 37% of total wine production. “Blaufränkisch”, which is the second most important red wine of Austria (following Zweigelt), is a dominant variety of the province of Burgenland. Blaufränkisch has a full-bodied character and unique “spicy” taste.

The small structure of Austria's agricultural producers was once seen as a market handicap, but is now perceived as one of its greatest strengths. Small family-operated farms, each with a very individual philosophy are producing food and crafting wines of stunning character and high quality. Austria is the world record holder in organic farming as 16% of all farmland is produced organically.
