Exports reach new heights, high-quality wines remain popular

Exports of Austrian wine have reached a new high, according to the 2011 numbers recently published by the Austria Wine Marketing Bord. Despite a relatively small outcome, profits reached 126 Mio Euro (USD 165.7 million) last year. Accountable for the good result was not the quantity, but a raise in exports of high-quality wines.

The main importer is still Germany, however, the US market has shown significant growth over the course of the last three years, as authentic Austrian grape varieties such as Gruner Veltliner and Zweigelt become more and more popular amongst North American chefs and gourmets.

Due to the low number of harvested grapes in 2009 and 2010, average prices increased by more than one third. However, winemakers can heave a sigh of relief. 2011 proofed to be an excellent wine year, and nothing should stand in the way of 2012 being another record breaking year for Austria.
