Paper sector dealing with a difficult economic environment

In the first half of 2012 the technical production of the paper industry in Austria rose by 5.8 % and the production volume increased by 2.5 %. 556,000 tons of paper products (+ 2.3 %) worth € 1.1 billion (+ 6.4 %) were sold. The surprisingly high increase in value, however, is due to a onetime situation in the miscellaneous paper products sector.

The packaging sector is an important indicator of overall economic progress. In this area alone there is a negative development in value (-2.5% TP/-0.5% AP), but a rise in volume of 2.9 %, whereas the number of employees and incoming orders remain stable.

Overall, for the year 2012 the Austrian Association of Paper Processing Companies is expecting zero change in value and a slight decrease in volume. Employment as well as the number of orders will only be affected by minor changes.

Generally the companies are facing high volatility as well as last-minute orders; as a consequence they are barely able to plan in advance. These circumstances are not expected to change in 2013.
