Framework represents a turning point in the use of biomass

The EU 2030 framework for climate and energy policies is being well received in the Austrian paper industry. Werner Auracher, CEO of AUSTROPAPIER said, “We welcome the new framework and believe it’s a turning point regarding a reasonable subsidies policy for biomass.” The cellulose and paper sector hopes that the competitive inequalities of the past will now be halted and wood as a resource used more efficiently in the future. Currently the Austrian paper and cellulose industry imports over 40% of its needed wood, 25% of which comes from overseas, since domestic supply as well as that from neighboring countries is not sufficient.

The framework presented by the European Commission on January 22, 2014 seeks to drive continued progress towards a low-carbon economy. It aims to build a competitive and secure energy system that ensures affordable energy for all consumers, increases the security of the EU's energy supplies, reduces dependence on energy imports and creates new opportunities for growth and jobs.
