Change through Exchange: University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign celebrated 40 years of exchange programs with Austria

November 1, 2011

Over 2,000 students have so far benefited from program

The University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign (UICU) celebrated four decades of academic exchange with Austrian universities by organizing the conference ‘Promoting Global Leadership via Academic Exchange” at the end of Oct. 2011. Over 2,000 students so far from Austria and the University of Illinois have been involved in the exchanges and have benefited from a broadened horizon. The program with Austria started in 1971 as a teacher training itinerary in Baden (close to the Austrian capital, Vienna). In 1991 the program moved to Vienna and Prof. Bruce Murray took over as its director.

Austria was the 6th most desired study abroad destination for the University in the academic year 2009/2010. 68 University students were sent to its four Austrian educational partners (Vienna University of Economics and Business - WU, University of Vienna, Vienna University of Technology and Diplomatic Academy of Vienna) to study the German language, political science, business or technology. The programs have proven to be successful, also thanks to having been expanded to disciplines other than just German studies.

Among the guests joining the celebrations were Austrian Consul General in Chicago Thomas SCHNÖLL, the UIUC’s Interim Associate Provost for International Affairs Wolfgang SCHLÖR,
the WU’s Vice Rector of Research, Foreign Affairs and External Relations Barbara SPORN, Austrian book author and filmmaker Josef HASLINGER and the Austrian Trade Commissioner in Chicago Franz RÖSSLER.
