Celebrating at the groundbreaking of the Oakland Airport Connector, the largest contract in DBB´s company history, from left to right:  Stefan Wabnitz / CEO Doppelmayr Cable Car, BART President James Fang, Andrea Doppelmayr and Austrian Trade Commissioner Rudolf Thaler.

For decades the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) has sought to address congestion between the Oakland Airport and a public transportation hub at the Oakland Coliseum. On Sept. 23, 2010 BART defined the solution with cable car technology provided by Austria´s DCC Doppelmayr Cable Car GmbH & Co KG . The two signed contracts—an intensely sought $361 million contract for cost efficient and environmentally responsible cable transit, as well as a $100 million, 20-year operations and maintenance contract for the system—show how an 118 year-old Austrian company offers technology relevant today and into the future.

Scheduled for completion in 2014, the 3.1 mile automated people mover will provide convenient service at a maximum speed of 31 mph. It will initially consist of four trains of three cars each carrying 1,492 people per hour per direction.
