From July 26-28, 2011, Trade Commissioner Franz Roessler and Anders Benson, Sector Manager, conducted a fact-finding mission in Washington DC together with a delegation from the Association of the Austrian Machinery & Metalware Industries (FMMI) in Vienna and Orgalime European Engineering Industries Association in Brussels. The theme was Manufacturing Policy and its Role in the Future Development of Industry. Main topics evolved around three challenges: the shortage of a young, skilled workforce, innovation and energy/environmental policy. The consensus among Americans and Europeans alike was that these issues need to be addressed at home in order to meet global competition. Details may vary slightly, but the similarities in the US and EU abound. Several items for cooperating on standards and innovation were discussed, and developments will continue.
