This year’s National Restaurant Show recently took place at McCormick Place in Chicago. From May 16th to May 19th attendees visited exhibits showcasing varieties of freshly made foods including appetizers, main dishes and desserts. Moreover, exhibiting companies took the opportunity to present their newest kitchen equipment and technologies. Different types of beers and wines were also sampled by the visitors.

The Austrian gastronomy sector was represented by two companies, namely Thonhauser and iSi . The latter produces pressurized gas cylinders for whipped cream as well as cold gas containers and cold gas airbag inflators for the automotive industry. Thonhauser plays a leading role in providing cleaning and disinfection equipment for breweries.

Despite its outstanding program this year the show was also affected by the current recession in the U.S. This year’s decline in numbers of attendees clearly supports this fact. The gastronomy industry is in particular under pressure and is facing declining demand and sales. Famous luxury restaurants are not booking up and people have started to save money by cooking at home. Therefore the emphasis of the show was more on finished products this year rather on high-end products.
