ARA Altstoff Recycling Austria reports

According to a survey done by the European Commission, Austria, along with Luxembourg, Germany, and Slovenia, is at the very top of the European Union in terms of separating trash. In fact, 97% of the population sorts its trash by type, a good 8% higher than the average in the European Union.

Austria collects the most waste for separation across all of Europe. In 2010 households contributed the most with 504,000 tons (2009: 499,000 tons). That represents an increase of approximately 1% and indicates that improvements can still be made despite high standards for the separation of trash. The national average saw every citizen collect 116.8 kilograms of packaging and thus achieved a value that exceeded that of 2009 by 0.2%.

Concerning trash separation done by businesses, there was an increase of about 2% over 2009. A total of 331,000 tons of packaging were recorded compared to 325,000 tons in the preceding year.

According to Dr. Christoph Scharff, Director of ARA Altstoff Recycling Austria , “It is a pleasure to see that Austrian households and businesses have once again established collection records in order to save the environment. They make an important contribution in the fight against global warming: in 2010, more than 620,000 tons of CO2 equivalents were saved thanks to packaging recycling. In addition to that, packaging collection is an indispensable contribution to the amount of resources in the Austrian economy. Our bulk trash bins are a valuable source of raw materials due to the fact that ARA processes 95% of the recycled raw materials within the country.”

“After the decline of the raw material markets in 2008 and 2009, the market prices have recovered. We have implemented these advantages in the form of tariff decreases,” says Werner Knausz, also a Director of ARA.

ARA anticipates royalties of about €159 million. This figure is considerably lower than the revenue from 2010 and is the result of the tariff decreases that began 1/1/2011 and 1/7/2011.

ARA will also award contracts for the collection and sorting of light and metal packaging. ARA places particular value on the ecological aspects of waste logistics.
