Stift Schlägl Exports to Los Angeles

November 21, 2009

First container of Austrian specialty beer sent to importer on the West Coast

For the first time ever a container with approximately 80 hectoliters (2133 gallons) of Schlägl Beer was shipped to Los Angeles this week, with a second shipment to follow in January. With these shipments, the Schlägl Monastery Brewery has joined the Hoffstettner Brewery on the list of companies from the Mühlviertel region exporting to the USA. For Markus Rubasch of Stift Schlägl, this is a sign that it is still possible to be successful in the beer market with niche products. According to Rubasch, “our sales have increased by three percent. This is a remarkable result in difficult economic times when others are experiencing declines in sales.”  The Schlägl Monastery Brewery produces around 25,000 hectoliters (660,000 gallons) of beer each year.  Including their forestry and restaurant businesses, the monks generate around €11 million in annual sales.

You can have a look at the choice of beers (e.g. Kristall, Urquell, Red Ale, Doppel Bock, etc.) on their importer´s website: http://www.morandell-beverages.com/MORANDELL-MI-Start_Page.htm
