May 26, 2017

Austrian Lenzing Fiber investing in $293 million Alabama plant expansion

As a global manufacturing leader in specialty high-tech TENCEL® fibers, the Austrian firm Lenzing AG has broken ground and is constructing a plant to more than double their US fiber production.  The plant is located in Axis, Alabama near Mobile.  At 140,000 tons annual production expected in 2019, this will be Lenzing’s largest production site in the world.

TENCEL® branded lyocell fibers from the house of Lenzing are of botanic origin and extracted from the raw material wood. The fiber is comparable to viscose and consists of cellulose fiber made from dissolving and spinning bleached wood pulp.  Production is sustainable using organic chemicals and water in a sophisticated nanotechnology process.  Lenzing is the only fiber producer to manufacture lyocell on a large scale.  Search TENCEL® on Amazon.com to find it in hundreds of high-end products from bedding and undergarments to denim and athletic gear.

Why Alabama, USA?  According to Lenzing’s press release , the decision to build this plant at the site was supported by the good infrastructure and attractive energy costs.
