Tribology for a Smooth Future

Austrian Center of Competence for Tribology Seeking U.S. Partners

The field of tribology, or lubrication engineering, is emerging as an international strength and core engineering competence for Austria. As parts get smaller, tolerances get tighter, materials get more sophisticated and the line between electro and mechanical blurs, the interaction between parts is becoming more complex. Tribology studies how parts interact and provides solutions for them to work efficiently together, from how metals are machined to how mechanical assemblies function in sophisticated medical devices. Austria is a key driver in advancing tribology from its traditional status to a competitive source of differentiation in high tech industries.

The Austrian Center of Competence for Tribology (AC2T research GmbH) offers consulting, research and development services to engineering-driven industries in such fields as medical devices, metal processing, communications, chemicals and transportation. With approximately 75 employees comprised primarily of an interdisciplinary team of scientists, the private company has been founded out of the COMET-Kplus competence centers initiative. It is in the process of defining long-term basic research and multiple firm projects from its European research networks and client firms. AC2T also seeks contact with US subsidiaries of Austrian firms, particularly ones with product responsibility for safety-critical systems.
