WEFTEC 2013: Austria as a hub for finding European technologies and for exploring the European market

October 10, 2013

Austria at the largest water quality event

Wolfgang van Appeldorn, Senior Wastewater Engineer, ILF Consulting Engineers, Innsbruck, Austria, summarized the wastewater market in Central-Europe at the water quality show WEFTEC in Chicago on October 7, 2013. Mr van Appeldorn described projects recently realized in Austria, Germany and Poland, and showcased how innovative European solutions/technologies addressed particular challenges.

Mr van Appeldorn showed that challenges on both sides of the Atlantic are very similar, such as how to cope with the costs associated with new wastewater treatment regulations related to nutrient removal, microfiltration and energy efficiency. Austria is an ideal hub for exploring the European market or for finding European technologies that could add value to North American projects.

European companies currently focus their technology development in the following fields:
1. Increase of energy efficiency (keyword: net-zero energy wastewater technical plant)
2. Phosphorous recovery from wastewater and/or sludge (keyword: urban mining)
3. Emerging pollutants (micropollutants.net)

Best practice examples in Europe introduced at WEFTEC were:
1. Vienna Wastewater Technical Plant, Austria (Net-zero energy operation envisaged by 2020)
2. Strass Wastewater Technical Plant, Austria (Net-positive energy operation since 2005)
3. Wastewater infrastructure upgrade in Warsaw, Poland (adapting wastewater treatment at Poland’s largest wastewater technical plant to EU requirements for sensitive areas.)
4. Hamburg Wastewater Technical Plant, Germany (Net-positive energy operation since 2011)
