EUR 18 million R&D project to create and expand educational institutions and highlight the importance of Upper Austria as THE plastics region in Europe

Austrian companies such as Engel, Greiner, Borealis, SML and Starlinger, just to name a few, are world leaders in the areas of plastics machinery and innovative plastics solutions. The province of Upper Austria with some 220 plastics companies and a workforce of 34,000 employees plays a major role in the Austrian plastics industry. However, the image of the branch does not match its high-tech status. In order to enhance the importance of the plastics sector and Upper Austria as “the region for plastics”, the federal and local government in collaboration with the Johannes Kepler University of Linz and Borealis has committed to invest EUR 18 million in research and education by 2011.

Upper Austria’s location and innovation agency TMG has been assigned to coordinate the project with a large part of the EUR 18 million budget flowing into the development of university institutions in the polymer sciences area (the Institute of Polymer Chemistry at the Johannes Kepler University has already been founded as part of the project). Other image enhancers include non-academic research, support for existing and establishment of new companies in Upper Austria as well as generating awareness of the Upper Austrian plastics location in Europe.

Meanwhile, AMI and Borealis are combining their R&D activities and expanding the
Borealis Innovation Center (BIC) with an investment of EUR 22 million and the creation of about 100 new jobs.
