Vienna - Europe's most innovative city

2. May 2013

The latest ranking by Australian agency "2thinknow" names Vienna as Europe's most innovative city. Worldwide only Boston and New York are ahead of Vienna.

Australian innovation agency 2thinknow compares data on 1,540 cities worldwide to produce its annual "Innovation Cities Global Index" , which finally publishes rankings on 445 cities.

31 areas are evaluated with a total of 162 indicators taken into account. Factors such as cultural assets, networked markets and human infrastructure – e.g. mobility, start-ups, education and technology – form the basis for the analysis. The goal is to determine which cities offer the best conditions for the successful implementation of innovative ideas in regional or global innovations.

Vienna comes third overall in the 2012 rankings, just behind Boston and New York, thereby climbing two places on the 2011 ranking. The study names Vienna as the most innovative city in Europe, closely followed by Paris, Munich and London.
