European Inventor Award 2013 goes to Julius Blum GmbH from Austria

19. June 2013

BLUMOTION, a damper system for the smooth closing of furniture doors, has won the European Inventor Award 2013 in Amsterdam.

The European Patent Office (EPO) awards the European Inventor Award once a year in a total of five categories. This year an Austrian company, Julius Blum GmbH , won the award in the “Industry” category. The international jury’s decision was based on the combination of the system’s major benefits and sustainable commercial success: the award-winning invention acts as a global industry standard in kitchen furniture and is produced exclusively in Austria.

The Austrian kitchen hardware manufacturer has long been committed to making sure that doors, drawers and lift systems close silently and gently. Blum’s research department took the first steps to develop and perfect the BLUMOTION damper system about 13 years ago. The mechanism has been subject to constant further development: the latest generation of hinges has seen the entire damper system integrated into the hinge boss.

This has made BLUMOTION one of the most successful product developments of this international, family-run company, which generated revenues of EUR 1.26bn. Blum invests 4% of its annual revenue in research and development and holds around 1,200 patents worldwide.
