Happy birthday, ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA!

28. April 2016

ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA is celebrating 70 years in the service of internationalisation. The organisation’s first office opened in Paris in April 1946, and its network now comprises over 110 offices all over the world.

After the end of World War II, it quickly became apparent that internationalisation would become ever more important for the Austrian economy. Ultimately, only expansion of the export economy would create momentum, growth and employment within the country.

To this end, the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber opened its first international office in Paris on 1 April 1946 and ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA (as the Austrian export economy’s internationalisation agency is now known) came into being.

Key milestones along the way to ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA’s global network included the opening of its first US location (in Chicago in 1954) and the expansion of its presence onto every continent, a process which is still ongoing today. The organisation was quick to appreciate the opportunities for Austria’s internationalisation presented at the turn of the 1990s by the opening up of the Eastern Bloc, EU membership and the expansion of the EU to the east. Austria’s export economy has been an unparalleled success story ever since.

ADVANTAGE AUSTRIA has also been named Best Trade Promotion Organisation by International Trade Center, a joint agency of the WTO and UN – proof that it is always one step ahead.
