Austrian start-up is revolutionising the market for bicycle inner tubes

29. August 2017

A bike inner tube that is up to 60% lighter than conventional tubes but far more robust is taking the cycle market by storm.

Tubolito’s ultra-light inner tubes are attracting international attention on the bicycle accessories market. These top quality thermoplast tubes are manufactured in one piece using ‘seamless’ technology, so there are no joints in their construction. Despite the light-weight plastic, the tubes are extremely long-lasting and puncture-resistant.

The inner tube developed by Austrian company Tubolito , which is 60% lighter and can take twice as much punishment as normal tubes, has been on sale in no fewer than six Central European countries since July and is certainly causing a stir. A production run of 40,000 units is already planned for 2018.

Besides the blend of materials, the key ingredient that has particularly helped tubolito maintain its lead in a competitive market has been its innovative and patented production technique. That adds up to a compelling performance for the newly developed and manufactured tubes, which are half the weight of conventional tubes and twice as tough.

Cycle inner tubes are traditionally made from rubber, but these are heavy, less robust and incorporate a join. The Austrian product, meanwhile, uses a specially developed seamless manufacturing process for the thermoplastic material. Product innovations such as inner tubes for racing cycles and e-mountain bikes are already in development.
