Rail transport & Smart Transportation - Rail Expo 2020

Infrastructure & Mobility

Present yourself and your range of services in the rail sector! A highlight of this economic mission is visiting the international IRAN RAIL EXPO, where all renowned state and private manufacturers and service providers from local, passenger and freight transport, as well as local and foreign trade visitors will meet.

Iran is one of the largest countries in the Middle East and has had a rail infrastructure since 130 years ago. The country's rail route is currently 13,000 km and the capacity of rail transport was around 0.75 million tons per year until 2015. In order to relieve the environment and boost the economy, rail transport has become a future topic for Iran, on which much hope is placed. Therefore, the rail network is to be expanded a further 20,000 km by 2025 and its capacity will reach 4.02 million tons annually.

In addition, some major cities in Iran have a subway system, with the one in the capital Tehran being the first and largest in the country. It comprises a total of 7 lines (not all fully developed) and extends over 221 km.

Over 1,000 cars transport more than 3 million of the 15 million inhabitants within the city every day. In addition, the interest in and potential of smart transportation applications in Iran is enormous. With nearly 75 million Internet subscribers, Iran is among the top 20 countries with the highest number of Internet users worldwide, and a broadband Internet penetration rate of 90.7%.

Although the country is currently struggling with political and economic challenges, not only does Iran offer interesting prospects to Austrian companies active in the rail transport and consulting fields, but also it provides the companies in the field "Smart Transportation" with many opportunities.

The event is part of the internationalization offensive go-international, a joint initiative of the Federal Ministry for Digital and Economic Affairs and the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber.
