Ski conveyor belt powered by the sun

10 March 2013

A world first from Austria: Sunkid's new solar-powered ski conveyor belt produces more electricity than it needs to operate.

With a global market share of around 70%, Austrian company Sunkid GmbH is the passenger transport industry’s leader in outdoor conveyor systems. Sunkid is highly committed to improving its products and recently presented its latest development.

The exciting innovation can be seen at heights of 2000m above sea level in the Austrian Alps, in the Zillertal Arena ski resort. It is a so-called Moving Carpet which produces more green power than it needs to operate thanks to the solar panels on the gallery enclosure. The excess electricity – around 27% of the power generated – can then be fed into the power grid; this not only means lower running costs, but faster returns on the system itself.

To date Sunkid has installed over 2,700 conveyor belts worldwide, totalling 125,000 metres. The most important foreign markets include Italy, Switzerland, the USA, Canada, Germany, France and Spain. Eastern Europe is becoming an increasingly important future market and currently generates a fifth of total sales. Exports account for more than 80% of the company’s revenue.
