RUAG Space to supply thermal insulation for ESA space satellite

The European Space Agency (ESA) has awarded the tender for the complete thermal hardware subsystem of the "SOLAR Orbiter" satellite to the Austrian company RUAG Space.  

RUAG Space has managed to edge ahead of its renowned international competitors and emerged as the successful bidder for supplying a complete subsystem for the ”SOLAR Orbiter“ satellite from the European Space Agency (ESA). The subsystem involves the thermal insulation of the whole satellite including special radiators used for cooling. Astrium UK will be responsible for building the satellite.

The ESA’s new science mission will study the sun with a focus on solar wind from 2017 onward. The “SOLAR Orbiter” will be heading closer to the Sun than any previous satellite.

A special layer of thermal insulation from RUAG Space, composed of several individual layers of metalized polyester and polyimide film, will provide additional protection against the extreme solar radiation. Together with the special radiators supplied by Astrium Spain, they will keep the inside of the satellite at a tolerable temperature, thereby ensuring the ideal conditions for the sensitive measuring devices.

With a total value of EUR 7 million, this is the largest single order to date for RUAG Space in the thermal systems division.
