Austria is EU's second wealthiest country

Austria is the second richest country in the European Union after Luxembourg. Outside the EU only the Norwegians and the Swiss are doing better than Austria.

According to the latest data from the EU statistics experts, Eurostat , gross domestic product (GDP) per capita in Purchasing Power Standard (PPS) ranged from 47% to 271% of the EU average (100%).

With a GDP level of 131%, Austria had the highest GDP per capita of all EU member states except Luxembourg (271%). This made Austria the second richest EU country in 2012, closely followed by Ireland (129%), the Netherlands and Sweden (both at 128%). The other countries above the EU average were Denmark (125%), Germany (121%), Belgium (119%), Finland (115%), the United Kingdom (110%) and France (108%).

In Italy (98%) and Spain (97%), GDP per capita was slightly below the EU average, as it was in Cyprus (91%). The two countries with the lowest GDP per capita against the EU average were once again cited as Romania (49%) and Bulgaria (47%).

The only non-EU countries with higher GDP per capita than Austria were Norway (195%) and Switzerland (160%).
