Business location Austria: international businesses are locating to Austria in record numbers

18. April 2018

More than 340 international firms have put down roots in Austria for the first time in 2017.

The ABA-Invest in Austria business location agency was able to help a total of 344 international companies establish a presence in Austria in 2017, up 7.8% on the previous year. Investment rose by 2.6% to approximately EUR 724 million (compared with EUR 705 million in 2016) and the number of newly created jobs also rose slightly (up from 2,622 in 2016 to 2,672 in 2017).

The country with the most investors was once again Germany with 118 firms, followed by Italy, Switzerland and Slovenia, each with 26 companies who have decided to set up a formal presence in Austria. There was particularly healthy interest from investors from CEE/SEE countries, and with 99 companies coming to Austria, 29% of all the relocations ABA assisted with in 2017. There was also no let-up in interest from China, with 11 Chinese firms setting up shop in Austria with ABA support (12 in 2016).

Of the companies establishing themselves in Austria, 34 were operational in the research and development sector and 22 were manufacturing firms, while 11 of the companies also used Austria as a springboard to access other markets. The most heavily represented sectors included industrial services (51) and IT/telecoms/software (49). ABA also looks after international start-ups, and the number of fledgling companies settling in Austria rose from 18 to 24 (+30%) in 2017.

Austria’s particular attractions as a business location include its hub function for Central, Southeastern and Eastern Europe, its great stability, the rule of law and the quality and motivation of its skilled workforce – all factors in its success are gaining in significance in difficult geo-political circumstances.
