At the International Film Festival in Melbourne Markus Schleinzer managed to scoop the "TeleScope Award for the Best New Talent from the EU“ with his début film.

Hot on the heels of the success of Karl Markovic’s film “Breathing” at the Sarajevo Film Festival at the end of July, another Austrian filmmaker is gaining acclaim: “Michael”, the debut from Markus Schleinzer, won the “TeleScope Award for the Best New Talent from the EU” on August 8th at the renowned Melbourne International Film Festival (MIFF) . A total of 12 films from 12 countries competed in this category. “Michael” was first screened at this year’s Cannes film festival, making it the only Austrian film at the event.

In 2011 there were 24 Austrian films – 1 feature film and 23 shorts – at Australia’s oldest and largest film festival. As with every year there were films from around 50 countries across the globe on the programme. The MIFF was held from July 21st to August 7th.
