Grüner Veltliner Goes Australia

26 September 2018

Austrian wine has been gaining momentum in Down Under, and in particular Austria's signature white "Grüner Veltliner" has conquered the hearts of many wine lovers in Down Under.

On 28 & 29 August 2018, Winestate organised the very first Global Gruener Veltliner Challenge at the Adelaide Wine Centre. In a blind tasting, over 150 entries from various regions around the world were tasted and judged by an international panel including Peter Schleimer (Editor-in-Chief of the Austrian industry magazine Vinaria), Larry Jacobs (Hahndorf Hill), Jan Taborsky (Topper’s Mountain, New England), & Michael Sykes (Lodestone Wines). The judging, completed over two consecutive days, was rounded off by a stand up trade tasting and masterclass. The large majority of the 90 Austrian entries received highest accolades, final scores and awards of the challenge will be published later on in the year in a special edition of Winestate.

The end of Grüner Veltliner week was celebrated in style with a follow-up tasting and networking reception at the Royal Automobile Club in Sydney, held in association with the Austrian Wine Marketing Board . We were excited to introduce our guest speaker of the night, distinguished Austrian wine and Grüner Veltliner expert Peter Schleimer, who told our guests what this very special white wine from an autochthonous Austrian grape variety is all about, and why it has conquered the hearts of wine lovers. After the presentation, the well over 200 invited guests from the Australian-Austrian business network had the unique opportunity to enjoy over 100 outstanding Austrian drops from a variety of regions.
