Austrian food & beverage producers continue to enjoy considerable success in the global marketplace. The fact that many of our companies are innovative niche players gives them the ability to be innovative and respond swiftly to changing consumer behavior. The current trends towards vegetarian and vegan products, consideration of a healthier diet, fewer sweets and more organic food offer new opportunities for Austrian companies in the food sector and their international business partners.

Also the trade figures for the first half of 2018 confirm the constant upward trend we have seen over the past decade and suggest another successful year for Austrian food and drink producers and their Australia n importers and distributors . Whilst energy drinks have experienced a slight dip during the first six months, the biggest winners have been dairy (in particular whey and milk powder) as well as lactose and lactose syrup, both gearing up for another peak performance after reaching a record high in 2016.

August to October have traditionally been the busiest months of the year for our Sydney foodie team, with 2018 being no exception. August was devoted to the promotion of Gruener Veltliner , Austria's signature white which has conquered the hearts of wine lovers in Down Under and found its way onto the winelist of many top restaurants. The week started off in Adelaide with a blind judging, masterclass and trade tasting held in Adelaide and finished off in style with a networking reception at the Royal Automobile Club in Sydney , where well over 200 invited guests from the Australian-Austrian business network had the unique opportunity to enjoy over 100 outstanding Austrian drops from a variety of regions.

In September the focus shifted to food products & foodservice solutions, when ten Austrian participants  showcased their expertise at our ninth group exhibition at Fine Food Australia . The busy trade show was completed and rounded off by storechecks at local retailers and an industry networking event held in the nearby Wharf Hotel.

Another highlight of our activities in this sector will be our upcoming  Aussie & Kiwi delegation to Vienna on occasion of the annual food event Marketplace Austria  on 17 October. Eleven company representatives including major players from the Australian and New Zealand food & beverage industry will take the opportunity to meet with Austrian suppliers and exporters before continuing on to Paris to meet the "future of food" at SIAL 2018 .
