Austria at Cockatoo Island Film Festival 2012

We are pleased to announce that Austria will represented by no less than three films at this year’s Cockatoo Island Film Festival.

Thu 25 Oct 6:00 PM NSW Mining Skills Hub (BLDG 124 Upstairs): La Ronde

La Ronde consists of 10 scenes between men and women, and each ends with one partner encountering a new one; a carousel representing the turning circle of desire. An all-knowing interlocutor guides us through a series of affairs in Vienna at the beginning of the 20th century. A soldier meets an eager young lady of the evening. Later he has an affair with another young woman, who becomes a maid and does similarly with the young man of the house…

Fri 26 Oct 6:00 PM Turbine Shop Cinema: Breathing

Celebrated Austrian actor Karl Markovics, best known for his role in this Oscar winning film The Counterfeiters, makes an assured feature debut as a writer and director with Breathing. Thomas Schubert playing the lead, Roman Kogler, a young man who lives in a juvenile offender's institution, will be joining us from Austria for a Q&A session after the screening.

Also look out for Trains of Thoughts in the documentary competition and the La Ronde special performance. Trains of Thoughts is an audio-visual essay, which reflects upon and compares metro systems around the world. It is an exploration of a world inside the world as well as feelings, fascination, obsession, fear and themes - of survival, control and silence - that revolve it.
