Red-White-Red-Card attracts qualified workers to Austria

18 August 2015

Skilled workers from around the world interested in relocating to Austria can make use of a flexible immigration scheme: The “Rot-Weiss-Rot – Karte” (Red-White-Red Card system). It aims to facilitate the immigration of qualified workers from non-EU countries and their families with the prospect of permanent settlement in Austria.

Since the introduction of the “Rot-Weiss-Rot Karte” in 2011, skilled migration to Austria from non-EU countries has tripled. The Austrian government would like to increase the numbers even further by improving the public image of the card, by developing more targeted information campaigns within the countries of origin and by establishing a welcoming culture in Austria.

The points system of the”Rot-Weiss-Rot Karte” is based on criteria such as qualifications, work experience, language skills, age, and studies completed in Austria. The Red-White-Red Card is issued for a period of twelve months and entitles the holder to fixed-term settlement and employment by a specified employer. Persons who immigrate to Austria with the “Red-White-Red Card“ do not need to prove German language skills before entering the country (they are not subject to the requirement of “German prior to immigration”). However, points can be collected for knowledge of the German or English language.
