Modular Construction Provides Temporary Quarters of Austrian Parliament during Renovation Phase

20 June 2017

Three temporary pavilions with a surface of 10.000 square meters are built on the Heldenplatz as well as in the library courtyard offering meeting rooms and office space for Austrian parliament staff, using an innovative modular construction system developed by Lukas Lang Building Technologies GmbH.

The standardised components made of local timber are assembled by means of a screwed and plug-in connection at the construction site. The multitude of design and combination variants also creates individual planning and allows industrial prefabrication of the building parts. Thanks to the modular system, the space division of the wooden pavilions can at any time be adapted to the needs of the users and thus easily and cost-effectively be changed. Each of the pavilions comprises three stories. The pavilion in the library courtyard is completed with four levels.

When parliament staff returns to the renovated Parliament, the pavilions will be dismantled and the components will be
re-used in different configurations, and could be put to use to create 9 kindergartens or 100 single-family homes,
for example.

Renovation works of the 130 years old Austrian parliament will start in July 2017 and completion is expected to take 3 years.
