Austria enjoys strong demand as a business location. Last year 198 international companies set up business operations in Austria.

Austria’s popularity among international companies is on the rise. Following on from the economic turbulence in 2009, last year saw a significant increase in the number of international companies choosing Austria as their business location. Growth is expected to continue in 2011. In 2010 Austria’s national investment promotion consultancy ABA-Invest in Austria provided professional consulting services to 198 international companies setting up business operations in Austria (+25%), which invested around EUR 221 million (+166%) and created 1,383 new jobs (+43%).

Germany, which is traditionally the most important investor nation in Austria, maintained its leading position in 2010, accounting for 42% of all investment projects. And this trend looks set to continue: in 2011 ABA started the New Year with 155 open German investment projects. Interest from investors from the CEE/SEE has been rising steadily for years (45 companies set up businesses) and the same is true for the BRIC countries (21 investment projects).

Developments in the field of research and development are gratifying; the number of R&D investors to which ABA provided professional assistance in locating business operations in Austria rose to 11. The number of production companies setting up operations in Austria also rose from 6 to 16. In turn, Austria as a headquarters location attracted 5 new headquarters projects. Broken down by sector, industry-related services (37 projects) were the most strongly represented, followed by IT (24), tourism (12) and mechatronics (11).
