Wine exports provide reason to celebrate

Despite a significantly reduced harvest in 2010, Austria's wine industry managed to increase exports in the first half of 2011.

Austrian Qualitätswein is now as popular as ever, both in Austria and abroad. Although export volumes fell in the first half of 2011 due to the reduced yield, it was possible to increase exports by 2%. The impressive sales result is due a surge in sales of high quality wine in the mid-range and premium price categories.

Developments in key markets were particularly pleasing: Austria managed to increase sales of bottled wine in the main market of Germany by 2% - and this despite a 9% decrease in export volume caused by limited availability. In Switzerland the value in sales increased by 11.4%, despite a decrease of 22% by volume. Wine from Austria is enjoying great success in the USA: volume +4%, value +14.3%. There were even greater revenue increases in the Netherlands (+ 22%) and Sweden (+50%).

The Austrian Wine Marketing Board is also optimistic about the near future: a high quality 2011 harvest, combined with a sufficient quantity of wine, means that they are striving to achieve a new export record in the coming year, whereby Austria should also see a sharp increase in volumes.
