Thomastik-Infeld is sending good vibrations round the world

28. October 2016

An Austrian company is the global market leader in strings for stringed and plucked string instruments. Its strings are used by artists all over the world.

Instrument strings are hi-tech products these days, with cutting edge materials like the plastics used in spacecraft technology and bio-compatible substances such as titanium being incorporated into manufacturing processes.

What began 100 years ago in a small workshop has since developed into a global success story. It is hard to imagine the musical instrument industry without Austria’s Thomastik-Infeld , the global market leader in the manufacture of strings for stringed instruments. The foundations for this success were laid in the 1950s with the invention of a string with a synthetic core and windings, and this product – the Dominant string – remains the world’s most popular violin string to this day.

From a technical point of view, the deciding factor in this breakthrough was a combination of new materials and the requisite processing technology. Research from first principles, an in-house development laboratory and a team of specialised technicians guaranteed the highest standards of quality, and it is no coincidence that Thomastik-Infeld has registered 80 patents since the company was founded.

The 200 staff at Thomastik-Infeld currently produce more than 2,000 different kinds of string for stringed and plucked instruments. Some 97% of the products manufactured are exported to over 80 countries on five continents. The company’s future does not lie in Austria or the USA, however, but in the Far East. The Chinese market in particular offers enormous potential, with the popularity of classical music there continuing to grow at a terrific rate.
