EuroSkills 2016: Team Austria retains European Championship title

With an impressive 14 medals, the Austrian team once again topped the list of nations at Europe's vocational skills competition in Gothenburg, Sweden – followed by Finland, France and Germany.

Around 500 talented youngsters from 28 European countries showed off their skills at the EuroSkills 2016 in Gothenburg from 1st to 3rd December. The Austrians put in a convincing performance yet again in 2016, with Team Austria taking 14 medals (5x Gold, 5x Silver, 4x Bronze) and 9 diplomas of excellence. This gave Austria first place in the country rankings, repeating the victory from 2014. Furthermore, Lisa JANISCH from Austria was the competitor with the best overall result at EuroSkills 2016, earning her the “Best of Europe” award.

The exceptional achievement of the Austrian EuroSkills team – consisting of 35 young specialists from 29 vocations – shows that the skilled workers which Austria needs so urgently for the future are receiving excellent education and training in Austrian companies and vocational schools.

Since the European skills championship was founded in 2008, Austria has won a total of 90 medals, 48 of which were Gold. The next EuroSkills will be held in 2018 in Budapest (Hungary). Before that, competitors can look forward to the World skills championship, WorldSkills 2017 in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates).
