A record result for the Austrian MICE industry

12. July 2018

An impressive 1.7 million delegates attended conventions in Austria in 2017 - helping Vienna to reach again second place in the international ranking of conference destinations.

Austria is one of the world’s top locations for conferences, seminars and annual general meetings. The sector is booming and once again reported record results last year, with the number of events, delegates and hotel overnight stays recorded by the Austrian Convention Bureau all up on the previous year.

The number of events held in Austria increased 11,9% to 21,640, and the total number of delegates rose to some 1.7 million event-goers compared to 1,5 million in the previous year. Conferences, particularly international conferences, were the key contributor to the rise in overnight stays in the Austrian events industry in 2016, and that continued into 2017, with overnight stays up 5.5% to 2.5 million. Events around economic, political or medical topics generated the most stays.

Having hosted 190 international conferences, Vienna made second place in the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) rankings for 2017, together with Paris. Barcelona hit the top spot with 195 international congresses, with Berlin, London, Singapore, Madrid, Prague, Lisbon and Seoul also ranking highly. Austria also performed well in the country rankings and, as in 2016, took 12th place. The USA, Germany and the UK took the top spots.
