Vienna’s central station goes „green“

7. August 2012

The newly built central train station in Vienna is the first one in Austria to be equipped with a solar roof for the purpose of power generation.

A photovoltaic system comprising of 1,200 m² and also the use of geothermal energy allow a solely solar module provided power generation for the entire central station.

The aim is to increase the proportion of renewable energy by 2020 from 31 to 34%. Undoubtedly Austria acts as a role model in this field as the EU-average is 16%. Also, Austria’s sun panels are very popular abroad – a third of all EU solar panels are produced in Austria, which is equal to an export ratio of 80%. Currently the world’s largest thermal solar plant in Saudi Arabia is being developed by Austrian companies and will be equipped with Austrian solar collectors.
