Austrian company to build Danish connection to the future Fehmarnbelt crossing

The construction work for the railway connection to the future Fehmarnbelt crossing between Denmark and Germany has been in full swing on the Danish side for some time. Recently, an Austrian company was able to secure its participation in the Ringsted-Fehmarn railway project worth a total of ca. 1.28 billion EUR. The Austrian company Swietelsky Baugesellschaft m.b.H. won the tender after competing against four other prequalified consortia, including two with Danish participants.

The order includes the construction of a 60-km-long railway stretch on the island of Falster, the installation/replacement of 52 switches and the renewal of a large part of the existing rails on the route Ringsted-Nykøbing F. An estimated 100,000 railway sleepers are required for the work. Construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2018 and completed in the summer of 2021.

The Fehmarnbelt crossing is expected to cost EUR 8.34 billion, of which EUR 7 billion is to be projected for tunnel construction. With the signing of the contract between Swietelsky and Banedanmark, the last one of the major contracts of the first phase of the Ringsted-Fehmarn railway project between Ringsted and Nykøbing F is in place.
