Austrian dairy giant NÖM builds £40m UK factory

8. August 2008

Austrian dairy firm NÖM is building a 20-acre industrial dairy in Telford. Set to open in December 2008, the new £40m plant in Telford represents one of the largest Austrian investments in the UK and will strengthen NÖM’s position as one of Europe’s leading dairies.

NÖM is investing around £40m in a major new dairy plant in Telford, creating some 300 to 400 new jobs. The Austrian company will source 95% of the workforce for its new 20-acre plant from within the UK.

Christoph Weissenback, NÖM’s Director of UK Operations, said he fully expects its first operation outside Austria to be a success. Britain is one of NÖM’s most profitable markets after Germany, Italy and Scandinavia.

NÖM’s UK sales are growing at an impressive rate, which is one of the principal reasons the company decided to locate its major new plant in Britain. The Telford site will manufacture products specifically for the UK market. At the moment, NÖM exports 170,000 tonnes of milk products to the UK annually but retailers in Britain are increasingly keen to source products locally for environmental reasons.

Construction is already under way, with production set to begin at the end of the year. NÖM is confident that a UK supply chain will be in place by the time the factory opens in December 2008. The 20-acre site will produce private label yoghurt and other yoghurt products for UK supermarkets.

About NÖM

NÖM is one of Europe's fastest growing dairy companies, concentrating on a range of branded and private label goods for some of the world's largest supermarket companies.

The group's principal activities are the processing and distribution of dairy-related products, such as milk, cream, milk drinks, yoghurts, butter, fruit and dairy-based desserts. Export activities account for 48% of the company’s total sales.

NÖM has set itself the ambitious target of increasing its annual sales to €1 billion by 2010 (as compared with €336.6 million annual sales in 2007). The new factory in Telford together with another high-tech plant in the Ukraine are to be the main drivers of this enormous growth in sales.
