24. November 2008

Waagner-Biro Stahlbau responsible for sophisticated 7,000 sqm glass roof construction

Only recently has the Westfield London shopping centre opened its doors. It is the largest city-centre shopping mall in Europe with 300 shops, several restaurants, cinemas and a London Underground station covering a total area of 350,000m².

The Westfield London was designed by Benoy International Architects and its centre is covered by an impressive steel and glass construction with a total area of more than 7,000m². This ambitious roof construction was completed by Waagner-Biro and the complex geometry of the roof required a total of 600t of steel, 1,681 triangular glass panes and 4,900 laser-cut metal struts with a total length of 11,000m.

Waagner-Biro AG is an Austrian company group with its headquarters in Vienna. The group has several business divisions ranging from bridge construction to steel and glass engineering and stage systems. Waagner-Biro employs 1,400 people at 24 locations around the world. The steel and glass engineering division (Stahl-Glas-Technik) supplies steel and composite structures for high-rise buildings as well as steel and glass constructions in which the company turns the technically and structurally complex designs of leading architects into reality.
