Rhomberg Bahntechnik and Alpine Bau shortlisted for Crossrail fit-out

Austrian construction firms team up to make the shortlist for fit-out work on 52km of Crossrail tunnels. Worth GBP 400.000.000 this represents one the largest contracts on the new east-west rail link across London.

Rhomberg Bahntechnik GmbH is leading a joint venture with fellow Austrian company Alpine Bau GmbH and the Spanish firm FCC Construction SA. The consortium is one of five shortlisted for the contract.

The work will include fitting out the entire tunnel section of Crossrail with over 50 km of track, overhead power equipment and ventilation and drainage systems. The tunnel boring machines for these tunnels were unveiled last month by Mayor Boris Johnson and transport secretary Justine Greening.

Rhomberg Bahntechnik GmbH is a specialist in the railway construction sector with an extensive portfolio worldwide. Previously Rhomberg has worked in London on the Stratford to Canning Town section of London’s Docklands Light Railway.

Having prequalified to tender, the shortlisted companies are required to submit their tenders by the end of August. A decision on the winning bid will be made in springl 2013 with work beginning the following year. The contract will run until 2018 when the finished tunnels will be handed over to Network Rail.
Austrian expertise is already being employed on the piling works for the new Crossrail Farringdon Station, which is being carried out by a joint venture between Austrian company Strabag and Laing O’Rourke.
