26. June 2012

The 2012 London International Wine Fair was held at ExCel in London’s Docklands on Tuesday 22nd –Thursday 24th May. The Austrian Pavilions showcased wines from 31 Austrian winemakers from all the major wine regions of Austria from the Danube valley to the Burgenland and Styria.

The strong presence of Austrian wineries at this year’s show underlines the continued and growing interest in Austrian wine whose successes continue to be widely reported in the British press, with recent features appearing in The Sunday Times, The Telegraph and The Independent.

The London International Wine Fair is a unique trade fair – the only event, which focuses on the discovery of new wines and spirits, emerging countries and new vintage releases. 20,000 wines from some 35 countries were on show, giving buyers and traders the opportunity to discover new wines and new market trends.

At the Austrian Pavilions there was much to discover - not only the opportunity to meet and taste new vintages with the winemakers in person, but also a daily programme of Austrian wine seminars presented by wine specialist, Jason Turner, and also the chance to participate in themed tastings at the popular Austrian wine bar. As a special feature the renowned Maximilian Riedel presented a special tasting on Austrian Wine and the Art of Wine Glass Design.

All in all the show is a key event for the international wine trade and gives Austria the opportunity to host a diverse programme of tastings and masterclasses with significant results.

Finally, at the fair the results of the 2012 International Wine Challenge (the Olympics of wine) were announced. Austria won 23 gold medals, 57 silver medals, 50 bronze medals and 58 commended awards.

2012 marks the year in which the great Austrian director Michael Haneke becomes only the second man to win the Palme d’Or in Cannes for back-toback films. 2012 is however, also the 2nd successive year in which Austria wins an impressive amount of the gold medals at the International Wine Challenge!
