Austria to host Days of Belarus’ Economy and Culture October 18-20


Austria will host Days of Belarus’ Economy and Culture on October 18-20. Over 150 Belarusian companies are expected to partake in the action.

As BelTA was told in the Belarusian embassy to Austria, a presentation of Belarus’ trade-economic potential will be held during the Days. Special emphasis will be put on promoting products made by Bellegprom concern. Vienna Fashion Centre will present an exhibition of the Belarusian light industry goods. Top managers of the Belarusian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Belarusbank, Belagroprombank, the National Marketing and Price Formation Centre and several Belarusian companies and enterprises will hold talks with their Austrian partners within the framework of a special contact-cooperation exchange.

The programme also includes a presentation of collections of the Belarusian designers representing the international youth creative studio Fashion Mill in Vienna Fashion Centre. A photo exhibition dedicated to Belarus will be opened in the Austrian capital as well.

All the actions will help promote the Belarusian-Austrian trade-economic relations, expand the Belarusian export to the Austrian market, draw attention to Belarus’ investment potential and develop scientific, cultural and humanitarian links.

Last year the trade turnover between Belarus and Austria totalled $124.9 million, up by 27.7% on 2005. The Belarusian export to Austria grew by 29.9% compared to 2005 to reach $21.8 million. At the same time the import rose by 27.2% to $103.1 million. Besides, supplies of machines, equipment and other investment goods, financed by the Austrian banks, account for over 60% of the aggregate import. Belarus mainly imports machines and equipment for its light and metal industries, for the energy sector and Belarusian Railways.

Austria ranks 25th in terms of Belarus’ bilateral turnover, 39th – in terms of export and 19th – in terms of import.

In January-August 2007 the Belarusian export to Austria rose by 59.4% as against the same period of 2006 and totalled $19.7 million. The import grew by 73.5% to reach $114.1 million. The trade turnover upped by 71.3% to $133.8 million.

Belarus mainly exports products of its ferrous metallurgy to Austria (twisted wire, rope, cable, wire made of carbon steel), which accounted for 62.1% of the total exports in 2006, wood and articles made of wood (timber and furniture) – 14.7%, chemicals (polyesters) – 5%, frozen fruits and nuts – 4% and glass fibre – 3.5%.

The Belarusian import from Austria considerably grew in H1 2007 due to the purchases of soil treatment machines ($3.3 million), metal thermal treatment equipment ($3 million), medical devices ($1.6 million) and centrifuges ($1.3 million). Moreover, over the period in review Belarus was purchasing chemical preparations in Austria, polymers, food additives, mixed fodder additives, cigarette tissue, malt, fireproof cement, enamel-paper and other goods.
