A clear view on the Acropolis

The Austrian company Glassolutions ECKELT supplied 11.000m² of glass for the construction of the new “Acropolis Museum”, which is without a doubt one of the most ambitious building projects of the last decades in Greece.

The company based in Steyr, Upper Austria, is Austria’s largest flat glass processor. As a specialized processor in the field of glass finishing in the domestic as well as the international market, Glassolutions ECKELT designs and realizes innovative large scale projects with a focus on security, thermal protection, sound insulation, static performance and design.

Highest possible transparency – this requirement from the Greek administration was achieved by the Architect Bernard Tschumi using vast expanses of glass facades, allowing an unobstructed view up to the Parthenon of the old Acropolis. Aside from marble and concrete it is clearly glass that dominates, covering more than 80% of all visible exterior and interior surfaces of the building.

In the whole museum, but particularly at the excavation sites in the lower levels, walkable glass floors have been extensively employed. Small viewing windows also allow a safe but interesting visual experience of exhibits. The extensive use of glass throughout the building allows a simultaneous view of the exhibits, the Parthenon and the Acropolis.

The integration of the archeological excavations inside the museum area as well as the omnipresence of natural light and the breathtaking view of the Acropolis were made possible in an exemplary manner by Austrian know-how.
