WorldSkills 2015: Team Austria wins 8 Medals in Brazil

The Austrians put in an enviable performance at the 43rd international skills championship, WorldSkills in Sao Paulo: 8 medals and 8th place in the country rankings.

Skilled workers from Austria are among the best in the world, as Team Austria conclusively proved at the international skills competition, WorldSkills 2015 , held in Sao Paulo from 11th to 16th August 2015. With 8 medals (5 x Gold, 2 x Silver and 1 x Bronze) and 16 Medallions for Excellence, Austria took its place in the world’s top ten, coming in 8th place. Austria even came first out of all participating European countries.

The Austrian WorldSkills team took gold medals in the vocations Heavy Vehicle Maintenance, Concrete Construction, Cabinetmaking, Restaurant Service and Architectural Stonemasonry. The two silver medals went to competitors in Painting & Decorating and Bricklaying, with a bronze medal in the category Construction Metalwork. This year the Austrian team was represented by 35 young skilled workers in 31 vocations, competing against over 1,150 international participants from 59 countries.

Austrian teams have regularly participated in the WorldSkills contests since 1961 and have won a total of 195 medals. The next WorldSkills competition will take place in 2017 in Abu Dhabi (United Arab Emirates), with EuroSkills 2016 coming up before that in Gothenburg (Sweden).
