New Vienna Main Station

October 30, 2014

Ease of international railway connectivity at central Europe's most modern railway station

In the past years, the former railway station Vienna South (Südbahnhof) has been expanded and developed into Vienna's new central main station. It is now an impressive building covering 109 hectares, including a large shopping center with around 90 shops, a food market, cafes and restaurants.

Inaugurated on 10 October 2014, it will be the new hub for interurban traffic in Vienna. The new station will also offer significantly improved connections to international destinations, linking four major highspeed railway lines converging in Vienna. By this means, Vienna as a main railway link in central Europe will offer faster intra-European connections and eases connectivity with the neighboring countries, but also within Austria.

A total of 1,100 trains are eventually expected to stop at the station each day, after the startup period until December 2014. One year later, once all track work is complete, the station is expected to handle 145,000 passengers daily.
