Caritas Austria supports thousands of Indonesian poeple

January 24, 2007

Tsunami 2 Years After

Hundreds of inhabitants from the Lhoong disctrict in the province of Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam gathered in December 2006 for a special festival called Selma Tan.
“Terima Kasih” were the most frequently used words at this day. The spirit was high and the people enjoyed themselves. Representatives of BRR Aceh – Nias, the Executive Agency for the Rehabilitation & Reconstruction of Aceh and Nias, Caritas Austria, the local aid organisation “Mamamia” and politicians gave moving speeches.
The reason for the festival was the successful collaboration and the reconstruction of numerous houses. 1.057 families in 15 villages were able to move into their brand new homes. Two years after the Tsunami disaster in December 2004 the people were able to resettle in their area. A kind of normal way of life has returned.
Caritas Austria supports people in Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and Thailand. Immediately after the Tsunami catastrophe Caritas gave 300.000 flood victims a hand with food, clean water to drink, clothing and tents. 6.000 families received emergency accommodation. The construction of 2.500 permanent houses is partially in progress, 400 other houses were repaired. Income generating projects, construction of orphanages and the reconstruction of hospitals and schools are further steps towards a better future.
