Two TV reports on renewable energy in Austria

The Floating House, Weissensee
25 January 2012

About 400,000 people watched each of two reports on renewable energy in Austria on the popular TV series "Eco Eye" on RTÉ 1 in January. Experimental passive houses and a self-sufficient town in southern Austria were the themes of the reports.

In the first show, broadcast on Tuesday 17th, presenter and eco-architect Duncan Stewart talks to three accomplished architects and showcases their work in a twelve-minute report.

First up - a ski hut at 1,600 metres above sea level. Viewers were treated to stunning views from the top of the Dobratsch mountain, and an interview with architect Günter Weratschnig. With the renovation of a 150-year old farmhouse to passive house standard, Herwig and Andrea Ronacher fulfilled their dream and impressed Stewart with their experimental insulation techniques. At nearby Weissensee, Christof Müller of Weissenseer Bau- und Holzsysteme GmbH pushed the boundaries of the possible with a floating passive house made of wood. Architect Stefan Kogler explained how..

The town of Kötschach-Mauthen, that is moving towards complete energy autonomy, features in the show on 24th January. Duncan Stewart interviews town engineer Christoph Aste on the roof of the town hall beside the electricity generating photovoltaic installation. Duncan also visits other nearby sources of renewable energy, such as:
the biomass plant where wood is burned to heat the town swimming pool, the schools and three hotels;
a wind turbine in the surrounding hills - the highest wind turbine in the world;
three micro-hydro electric power plants.
The generated electricity is sold to the local utility company which in turn is authorised to sell it to customers all over Austria at a premium "clean energy" rate.
