Advantage Austria thanks Ireland for "Douze points"

Conchita representing Austria at the Eurovision in Copenhagen
12 May 2014

A big "thank you" to the Irish voters for giving Austrian singer Conchita Wurst "douze points" at the Eurovision Song Contest in Copenhagen on Saturday night.

For the first time in 48 years, Austria won the Eurovision trophy on Saturday night. "It was fantastic for Austria to be in the limelight of this European-wide competition. We congratulate Conchita for representing us so well in Copenhagen and we thank the Irish public and jury for their support", said a happy Wilhelm Nest, Austrian Commercial Counsellor, Advantage Austria.

Conchita Wurst is the alter ego of Tom Neuwirth from Gmunden in Upper Austria who took second place in the Austrian TV talent show "Starmania" last year. The 25-year old graduated three years ago with a degree in fashion design in Graz and is now a full-time performer. Conchita set out on the Eurovision trail with the song "Rise like the Phoenix" with the idea of promoting tolerance and equality.
