Vienna is Europe’s most innovative city

9. April 2013

Based on 162 criteria, Vienna is the most innovative city in Europe and ranks third worldwide.
The Innovation Cities Global Index published annually by the Australian innovation agency 2thinknow compares 445 cities across the world in respect of their innovative potential. This year’s Index had a very gratifying outcome for the Viennese population. Moving up two places compared to 2011, Vienna came in third worldwide, just behind the US-based twin winners Boston and New York.

Vienna is the most innovative city in Europe, followed by Paris, Munich and London as well as Copenhagen and Amsterdam. The Austrian capital was also awarded the title Nexus City, which has been reserved to the 35 most innovative cities of the world. The Index is published annually to help innovators decide which places in the world offer them the best conditions for realising their innovative ideas.
162 assessment criteria
The assessment system of the innovation agency 2thinknow (founded in 2006) comprises regularly updated data of 1,540 cities; 445 of these cities were included in the ranking. The agency applies 162 indicators to examine 31 areas of innovation. In the agency’s latest report these indicators were classified according to three factors: cultural assets, human infrastructure (especially mobility, start-ups, education and technology) as well as networked markets. Based on these factors, the index assesses the conditions offered by the individual cities to entrepreneurs wishing to turn their ideas into regional or global innovation.
