15. March 2018

The Hon’ble Prime Minister of Bhutan, Dasho Tshering Tobgay visited Europe earlier in March 2018 along with a Bhutanese business delegation. Having landed at Brussels, the Prime Minister and his entourage left for Vienna with an agenda solely focussing on hydropower capacity building. During His Excellency’s visit to Vienna, he met with Dr. Wolfgang Leitner, CEO & President, ANDRITZ AG and other senior officials from the company.

During their meeting, on 9 March 2018, Dr. Leitner handed over a memorandum to the Hon’ble Prime Minister expressing ANDRITZ’s keenness to associate with Bhutan’s buoyant hydropower potential. It would also be pertinent to mention that ANDRITZ has been active in Bhutan for the last decade having supplied equipment for 2 existing projects namely Dagachhu and Lower Basochhu hydroelectric projects.

Further, during previous visits of ANDRITZ officials and meetings with the Hon’ble Prime Minister in Bhutan, there was a need shown from His Excellency on building capacity in Bhutan. Subsequently, in October 2017, Bhutan’s primary power utility namely Druk Green Power Corporation had entered into a JV with ANDRITZ HYDRO, to set-up a facility in Bhutan to manufacture and supply secondary equipment for hydropower plants. This JV was christened as Bhutan Automation & Engineering Limited.

During this important visit, a “Technical Assistance Agreement” was signed between ANDRITZ (Automation) and Dasho Chewang Rinzin, Managing Director, DGPC on the aspect concerning trainings. Later on 10 March, the delegation visited the Apprenticeship Training Centre in Weiz in addition to the factory tour at this location.

This important visit led by the Bhutanese Prime Minister to ANDRITZ, has created and opened up further avenues of mutual cooperation between Bhutan and Austria. ANDRITZ is thankful to His Excellency Dasho Tshering Tobgay and Dasho Chewang Rinzin for giving the opportunity to ANDRITZ during their visit to Austria. ANDRITZ stands committed to Bhutan, like always.
