8. August 2013

Pune (Poona) used to be called the „Queen of the Deccan“ and the „Oxford of the East“, having been the centre of Power of the Maratha Empire (1674-1859). It has a history as cultural and educational centre for many centuries with emphasis on education, arts and crafts, music and theatre. Pune City was founded at about 847 A.D. and is located on the western end of the Deccan plateau and cut in two halves by the Mutha river. Pune is about 150 km south-east of Mumbai and the 2nd largest city in the state of Maharashtra, now also the 8th largest city in India.

Not only lower operational costs in Pune (compared to Mumbai) but certainly also the more favorable climate have lured a number of illustrious industry names to Pune: TATA Motors, Kalyani Group, Bajaj Auto, Mahindra & Mahindra, Force Motors, Mercedes Benz and Volkswagen, to name just a few. It is home to the Automotive Research Association of India, responsible for the homologation of all vehicles available in India. Pune is the 3rd largest automotive hub in India, with all sectors of automotive industry present. Several automotive component manufacturers like Saint-Gobain Sekurit, TATA Autocomp Systems Limited, Robert Bosch GmbH, ZF Friedrichshafen AG, SKF, Visteon, and Continental Corporation are located here.

Just 20 years ago, Pune was considered like an „appendix“ to India’s financial centre Mumbai (Bombay) and Bombaites were slightly looking down on people and companies with an „Pune address“. At the same time, overall costs in Pune were much lower than in Mumbai, availability of skilled labor very good.
In 2011, Pune is a 3.1 Million city (Vienna: 1.7 Million <2011>; Berlin 3.5 Million <2012>) with another 5 Million people populating Pune District.
Pune City charms citizens and visitors alike with many parks and greenery, lots of excellent restaurants and bars as well as a good number of theaters, museums, live-music places - and not to forget OSHO’s Ashram, which still seems to be an attraction for a certain type of traveler.

With its history of Education, Pune offers excellent technical and other education at 9 universities and more than 100 colleges and technical schools with an estimated number of 500.000 students per year – PLUS: intercultural training and intercultural consultancy by ti communication.
